Daniel: Hello! What a nice teddy bear — it looks very funny. My name’s Daniel. What is your name?

Olivia: Hi! I’m Olivia. It isn’t a teddy bear. It’s a toy koala. I’ve brought it to the Explorer’s Club because I’m going to speak about this unusual animal. Besides, koalas only live in my country.

Daniel: Oh, so you’re from Australia, aren’t you?

Olivia: Yes. Oh, let’s hurry up and take our seats.

Dear friends,

Welcome to our International Explorers’ Club! I’m Mr Smith, the head of the Club, and I am very pleased to see you here. This year, young explorers from North America, Asia and Europe have come to our meeting. They will live and study at our Club. Though our members are only 11-12 years old, they are already experienced travellers. Later, they will tell us about their unusual trips and exciting adventures. We are proud to say that new Columbuses and Magellans are among us!

You’ll stay at the International Explorers’ Club for a month. During these four weeks you’ll meet famous explorers and sportsmen from different countries, play sports and visit some places of interest in England and Scotland. You will also have English classes, and I hope they will help you to improve your English.

Ex. 21. Listen to Andrew’s story about his family and his hobby. Say how he travels around his country.

I’m Andrew. I’m from Ireland, a beautiful green country on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean.

My family is friendly. There are five of us: Dad, Mum, my brother, my sister and me. I’m 12 and I’m the youngest.

All the members of my family like to travel, and every summer we have a cycling trip round Ireland.

We invite my uncle and his family to take part in our exciting trip. We develop a route, pack our things, take our bikes and go.

We usually ride around ten miles a day and then stay in small hotels for the night. From time to time, we stay in a place for a day or two and just go sightseeing or relax on one of the nearby beaches. Next year, we are going to join a group of tourists who want to cross France and Spain on bikes. Would you like to join us?

Indira: I’m from India, from Delhi. Have you been to India?

Mr Smith: Not yet. But I’d like to visit your country one day. When did you come to Great Britain?

Indira: Two days ago. I’ve already been to London.

Mr Smith: You went sightseeing, didn’t you?

Indira: Yes, that’s right. I visited the Tower of London, saw Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. I walked in Hyde Park and rode the London Eye.

Mr Smith: That sounds wonderful. Did you enjoy your London trip, Indira?

Indira: Yes, I took a lot of photos. I think my friends and my family’ll enjoy them.

Mr Smith: Very good. In a few minutes we are going to have a football match. Could you take some photos, please?

Indira: With great pleasure.

Mr Smith: Very good. Let’s hurry up and take our seats.

Ex. 54. Listen to the phone conversation. Look at the picture and say who Mrs Wilson should meet at the Club’s hall.

Mr Smith: Hello. This is Mr Smith. Can I speak to Mrs Wilson, please?

Jim: Hang on a moment, Mr Smith. I’ll get her.

Mrs Wilson: Good morning, Mr Smith.

Mr Smith: Morning, Mrs Wilson. I’d like to tell

you about the children who are going to stay with your family next week.

Mrs Wilson: The rooms are ready and we’ve

thought about the cultural programme. We’re ready to meet our guests.

Mr Smith: Two members of our Explorers’ Club will stay with your family: Olivia Revell from Australia and Nikita Smirnov from Russia.

Mrs Wilson: Lovely. We’ve never been to Australia or Russia. I hope the children will tell us lots of interesting things about their countries.

Mr Smith: I’m sure they will. They are sociable and friendly. You should collect them tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the hall of the Club.

Mrs Wilson: What do they look like?

Mr Smith: Nikita is quite handsome, but he isn’t very tall. He has got short fair hair and grey eyes. He is all smiles.

Mrs Wilson: And what does Olivia look like?

Mr Smith: Olivia is a pretty young girl with long, red wavy hair. She is short and slim. She wears glasses.

Mrs Wilson: I see. I hope we’ll become friends. So, tomorrow morning, 11 a.m., the hall, a handsome fair boy and a pretty slim girl.

Mr Smith: That’s right. See you tomorrow. Bye!

Speaker 1: I live in a small town which is situated in the south of England. My family lives in a nice detached house, which is not far from the town centre. I have a younger brother and an older sister, Jane, who is 25. At first, we shared a room with my brother. But then Jane got married and moved out. Now I have a nice big room of my own. We have a nice back garden. I often play there with my friends who live nearby.

Olivia: I live in Canberra, which is the capital of Australia. It’s a beautiful green city which is situated in the centre of the continent. I live with my parents in an old house which was built forty years ago. I have a room of my own. It’s large and comfortable. There is a nice garden with lovely flowers. We often invite guests round and have a barbecue near our swimming pool, which is in the garden, too.

Nikita: I live in an old Russian city Nizny Novgorod. We’ve just moved into a new flat. There are three rooms and a kitchen. I share a room with my brother, who is six. The room is large and there is enough space for both of us. There is a sports centre, which is situated near our house. My brother and I play tennis there.

— British children don’t open their presents on the 24th of December. They believe that Father Christmas (or Santa Claus) brings their presents in the night. So they get their Christmas presents on the morning of the 25th of December.

Question 2. What present does London get from the people of Norway?

— Every year, the people of Norway give the City of London a present, which they put in the centre of Trafalgar Square. It’s a really big Christmas tree.

Question 3. When do British people have Boxing Day?

— British people have an extra holiday after Christmas — Boxing Day. It’s on the 26th of December.

Question 4. When do people get cards without signatures?

— British people like sending cards. They send cards on Christmas and New Year, on birthdays and other special days. But on St Valentine’s Day they often don’t sign their names.

Question 5. When do children dress up as witches and ghosts?

— Grown-ups and children put on masks and dress like ghosts and witches on Hallowe’en, on the 31st of October.

Question 6. What fruit can become a lantern?

— On Hallowe’en, some people make special lanterns from a large fruit — a pumpkin. First, they take out the middle of the pumpkin. Then they cut out eyes, nose and a mouth. Finally, they put a candle inside the pumpkin.

Question 7. What other British holidays do you know of?

— Other British holidays are Pancake Day and April Fool’s Day in the spring, the Queen’s official birthday in summer and Harvest Festival and Guy Fawkes’ Night in the autumn.

Speaker 1: I like visiting new places, but I don’t like planes and trains. I prefer travelling by bike. I travel with my family. Of course, we can’t go for long distances, but there are so many interesting places around my city which tourists rarely visit. It’s exciting to ride a bike and enjoy the sights. Unfortunately, we can only travel in the summer.

Speaker 2: It’s exciting to travel by plane and by car, but I enjoy travelling by train. Some people think it’s rather slow and uncomfortable, but I don’t think so. I like to look out of the window and watch the places pass by, read books and talk with neighbouring passengers. Besides, you don’t have to depend upon the weather or deal with traffic jams.

Speaker 3: When I grow up, I’m going to become a pilot. I’m going to travel all over the world and visit new countries and cities. I believe that planes are the most comfortable way to travel. You needn’t carry a heavy rucksack, spend several days on a train or repair your bike. And it only takes you a few hours to reach the place you’ve dreamt about.

Speaker 4: I have already taken part in several walking tours. We usually get to the place by plane or by train, and then walk according to our route. During our trips, we swim in the lakes, gather berries and go fishing. My friends say it’s difficult to walk 15 kilometres every day, but I’m sure that walking tours make me strong and energetic.
