Speaker 1

I was a fairly good pupil at school. It was easy for me to learn and I was interested in the things my teachers told us in class. I read a lot. My usual marks were As and Bs, so my parents were proud of me. My favourite subject was geography. I wanted to know more about different countries of the world and the lifestyles there.

My school years were happy indeed. I had lots of true friends and very good teachers. Many of them gave us classes not only in the subjects they taught but helped us with our everyday problems too. Some of them were more than teachers, they were real friends, always ready to explain what we didn’t understand.

I’m afraid I was not a very successful pupil at school. My marks in science were not bad but I didn’t like reading, hated learning poems by heart, so you can imagine my results in English literature were rather poor. But in the fifth year a new teacher appeared in our school. Miss Stevenson taught English literature. She loved her subject and knew so much about English writers, poets, their lives and works. I got interested in English literature, began to read more and soon found out that lots of books were fairly good.

Speaker 4

My problem at school was exams. I was never good at them. Classwork was usually fine but my examination marks were practically always rather poor. My parents decided to hire a private teacher and I had extra science lessons at home with a private teacher. It certainly helped but even that preparation didn’t change my marks at the exams very much. I got C in physics, D in chemistry, and D in biology.

School Uniform

Many British schools have school uniforms. Some people think this is a good idea because you do not wear out your own clothes. Then some families don’t have much money and some families are rich. If pupils wear uniforms, you cannot say anything about their family budget. Uniforms also help you to save time. You don’t have to think what clothes to put on in the mornings! I am all for uniforms.

But school uniforms don’t often look smart and fashionable. I think they should be more comfortable. I don’t see what’s wrong with wearing jeans. But pupils usually have to wear grey or black trousers or skirts of the same colour and white shirts or blouses. White things easily become dirty and we have to wash them. I hate doing it. And I don’t like grey and black either.

Sometimes I dream about an ideal uniform. What can it be like? I am all for jeans. They’re unisex, they are fashionable, they can be black, green, blue, brown, grey. They are very comfortable and you can wear jeans in winter and in summer.

I don’t think that skirts are comfortable and it is really difficult to keep them in good shape.

As for blouses, in my opinion, they shouldn’t be only white. What’s wrong with light blue or beige blouses? In winter jumpers will be good and in summer T-shirts instead of blouses. Maybe in the summer we can all wear shorts.

But some of my friends are against school uniforms. They think there should be no school uniform at all and pupils should wear whatever they like. They are sure that pupils will soon learn which clothes are good for school and which are not. My best friend says that everybody has to form their own individual dress sense, but you can’t do it if for most of the day you and all your classmates wear uniforms which are exactly alike. And I think there is something in what she says.

b) a good education, my best schoolmate, a primary school, a long ruler, to speak loudly, his exercise book, a famous college, a noisy street, to pay money, a lot of glue, a pair of scissors;

c) Yesterday we painted the walls of our classroom. This school is the best place in the town to get secondary education. Joe doesn’t know mathematics very well. Physics is a difficult science. My elder sister is fond of linguistics. Lizzy took off her coat and entered the classroom. We decided to talk our holidays plans over. Secondary education is free in this country. He is interested in stamps and has a good collection of them. Are only children different?
