Christie: Hello, Andy!

Christie: What are you going to do on Saturday?

Andy: Nothing special. I might play football with Paul or go to the cinema.

Christie: Would you like to take part in an international Internet project?

Andy: That’s sounds interesting! What’s the project?

Christie: The members of our Club are going to build a website for “The International Explorers’ Club”.

Andy: Great! I think lots of our classmates would like to take part in that.

Christie: OK. I’ve already phoned Paul and Nicole, and they are both coming tomorrow.

Andy: Good! See you tomorrow at the Club.

Ex. 24. Listen to the conversation and say what the children are going to do tomorrow. Choose the correct answer.

Christie: Hey guys, right, we’ve got to do this ‘International Internet’ project. It says here we should research the most interesting facts possible about our country and post them on the site. Have you got any ideas?

Nicole: Well, we should include something about the famous people who were born here. There are so many, after all.

Christie: We also have some unusual traditions — people from other countries might be interested in them.

Paul: What about sport? The British are famous for loving sport. You know, cricket, tennis, boxing, even swimming. And let’s not forget our most popular sport — football!

Andy: We should say something about the geography and history of the United Kingdom, too.

Christie: OK. Let’s research all that and meet tomorrow to discuss the details.

Paul: Luckily, we have a lot of friends all over the country. I think they’ll help us.

Christie: Excellent! And you, Paul?

Paul: I’m going to write about football, the greatest sport in the world! What about you, Christie?

Christie: I’d like to talk about some extraordinary customs and traditions.

Dylan: That sounds interesting. What are you doing?

Andy: My classmates and I are trying to discover the most interesting facts about Britain and post them on the website. Could you help me to tell our foreign friends about Wales?

Section 5

Ex. 95. Read the conversation between the guide and tourists. Put the sentences in the correct order (1-10). Then listen to check the order.

Guide: Hello! I’m your guide. I’ll show you around Scotland this week. Have you got any questions?

Mike: Hello!

Christie: Hello! What will we visit first?

Guide: We are going to Edinburgh first. It’s the cultural centre and the capital of Scotland. On Sunday, we’ll take part in a Festival of Music and Drama.

Mike: Oh! A festival! That sounds amazing! I can’t wait to hear the bagpipes. Will the Grand Parade take place tomorrow?

Guide: Yes, it will be tomorrow. Every year the Grand Parade takes place with over 3,500 musicians, singers, bands and dancers from all over the world. All of them will be in their national costume.

Christie: Fantastic! Where can we watch the Parade?

Guide: They will parade through the city streets. It will be not far from your hotel.

Mike: OK! Let’s go to the hotel!

Ex. 132. How do British people spend their weekends? Listen to the report and study the diagram. Find out which activities are more and less popular in Britain. Compare the results with your classmates’ activities.

People in Britain spend about 30% of their free time watching television, 23% playing computer games, 20% with friends or relatives, 17% on sports and hobbies, and 10% on other activities.

Other popular leisure activities are listening to music, reading, gardening, eating out and going to the cinema.


Ex. 135. Listen to the dialogue and say what Alice and Brett are going to do. Choose the right answer.

Alice: Hello, Brett! Nice to see you! How are you?

Brett: Hi, Alice! I’m fine. Nice to see you, too! How are you going to spend your holidays? Why are you looking so sad? What’s wrong?

Alice: Today in my Maths lesson I got a bad mark in my Maths test.

Alice: Oh, no. You don’t understand. Yesterday, Mum asked me if I was getting ready to do the test. I said everything was fine.

But I didn’t do my homework. I played my favourite computer game, you know, it was so amazing!

Brett: Oh, I see! That’s really bad! You are really wasting your time playing computer games. I think you should tell your mum the truth and promise that you’ll never lie again.

Alice: Oh, it’s so difficult! But, you are right I must do it.

Brett: Begin with your homework and get a good mark as soon as possible.

Alice: Thank you very much, Brett. You’ve really helped me.

Speaker 1: People have different hobbies: travelling, sports or computer games. My hobby isn’t very popular among modern teenagers. I like ballet and I want to become a famous ballet dancer. I work hard and I’m sure that when I grow up, I’ll travel all over the world and appear in the best theatres.

Speaker 2: Not long ago, most people spent their holidays in the country or stayed at home. Nowadays, people can go anywhere on the planet. I like exploring new places and meeting new people and my dream is to visit South America. I have read plenty of books about the continent, its history and its modern life.

Speaker 3: I have an unusual hobby — Chinese. You are surprised, aren’t you? My granddad spent 10 years in China; he’s a doctor. He told me a lot about the country and its traditions and culture, but to speak Chinese I have to work hard. Next year, I’m going to travel to China and I hope I’ll be able to speak Chinese then.

Speaker 4: Some of my friends say that they like sport, but in reality, they miss PE lessons and spend weekends watching TV. I don’t think it’s healthy to do that. I am going to be a pilot because I’d like to see different countries and you have to be very fit to be a pilot, so I play football and basketball. I also go swimming three times a week.

Andrew: Hi, Jessica! I am pleased to see you again! You spent your holidays in Britain, didn’t you?

Andrew: That sounds great. Where did you go first?

Jessica: We spent a week in Wales.

Andrew: What did you like most of all in Wales? The fields of daffodils? The famous Mount Snowdon?

Jessica: No, I went in September and you can only see daffodils in the spring. Snowdon is a great mountain, of course, but I like waterfalls. There were plenty of lovely waterfalls. Believe me, they’re worth seeing!

Andrew: Where did you go then?

Jessica: To the north, to Scotland. We spent a week there, too.

Andrew: What did you do there?

Jessica: We took part in a cycling trip round the Lowlands.

Andrew: Wow! Did you stay in tents and make fires to get warm at night? Or did you spend nights in old castles with ghosts?

Jessica: Oh, no. No tents, no fires, no ghosts. We stayed in small hotels each night and after Scotland, we went to Northern Ireland. It’s a nice place to spend a holiday. Especially for people who are fond of gardening.

Andrew: Really? Why?

Jessica: The winter is warm and the summer is sunny. Perfect weather for plants, isn’t it?

Andrew: And then you went to England, didn’t you?

Jessica: You’re right. We went to London, Cambridge and Stratford-Upon-Avon. We visited lots of museums and enjoyed walking in the royal parks.

Andrew: And what did you do in the evenings? Watch TV? Play computer games?

Jessica: No, my new friends taught me how to play different board games and we played Scrabble and Monopoly.

Andrew: I enjoy playing these games too. Come to my place tomorrow. We’ll have a game night.

Jessica: Sure, sounds fun.
