Прошедшее совершенное время (Past Perfect Tense) - ОСНОВНОЙ КУРС
В предыдущем уроке мы уже познакомились с одним из времен группы Perfect — Present Perfect Tense. Вы уже знаете, что времена группы Perfect обозначают действия, события, которые предшествовали и уже завершились к моменту повествования в настоящем, прошедшем и будущем.
Past Perfect Tense служит для обозначения одного действия в прошлом, которое предшествовало другому. Момент в прошлом может быть обозначен указанием на конкретное время, когда действие было завершено: час, число, год. Нередко такое указание на время сопровождается временным предлогом by (к).
Структура образования Past Perfect Tense достаточно проста и схожа с Present Perfect Tense:
вспомогательный глагол to have в форме Простого прошедшего времени (Past Simple) — had + форма Past Participle (3-я форма, или ed- форма) смыслового глагола (см. список неправильных глаголов).

We had finished this work by six o'clock yesterday. — Мы закончили эту работу вчера к шести часам.
I had already done my homework when a friend of mine rang me up. — Я уже сделал все домашнее задание к тому моменту, когда мне позвонил один из друзей.
Приведенные выше примеры демонстрируют, что часть, содержащая в себе Past Perfect Tense, стоит в начале предложения. Однако она может стоять и в конце предложения. Это зависит от того, какое действие завершилось раньше.
When we came to the theatre the show had already begun. — Когда мы приехали в театр, представление уже началось.
Временные показатели, указывающие на момент завершения действия, события:
by three o'clock — к трем часам
by noon — к полудню
by Sunday — к воскресенью
by the 11th of November — к 11 ноября
by then — к тому, этому времени
by that time — к тому времени
by the end of the week — к концу недели
by the end of the month — к концу месяца
by the end of the year — к концу года
By seven o'clock on Friday I had already read the book. — К семи часам в пятницу я прочитал книгу.
He had left by the 7th of August. — Он уехал еще до 7 августа.
Useful point!
Есть несколько случаев, когда вместо времени Past Perfect Tense употребляется Простое прошедшее время (Past Simple):
• когда идет повествование о двух или нескольких действиях, а рассказчик перечисляет их в той же хронологической последовательности, как они происходили;
• когда повествование ведется о действиях, быстро сменяющих друг друга, особенно если эти действия выражены такими глаголами, как: to go, to come, to finish.
I took a shower and went to bed. — Я принял душ и пошел спать.
• в сочетании с союзами when, after, as soon as:
As soon as I finished work, I went home. — Как только я закончил работу, я сразу же пошел домой.
