ONTO

Не очень распространенный предлог и не совсем литературный, скорее разговорный. Явно образовался от двух “первоисточников” — on + to. Отсюда и значение — направление НА какую-то горизонтальную поверхность:

They ran onto the yard.

He emptied the ashtray (пепельница) onto the floor.

Следующие два случая употребления слегка выбиваются из простого и понятного правила:

1. движение, в результате которого человек занимает наиболее удобную, расслабленную позу: He rolled onto his back and closed his eyes.

И

2. продвижение ВНУТРЬ транспортного средства (но поскольку англоговорящие путешествуют НА транспорте (on the train, on the plane), тут как раз все ясно:

The kids were seated on the coach (автобус), and the journey began.

Зато этот скромный предлог оказался “не обижен” фразовыми глаголами!

1. BACK onto — выходить (о здании, вернее, о его тыльной части). Т.е. позади здания что-то находится: Their house backs onto the forest — Сразу за их домом находится лес.

BE ONTO
something иметь важную информацию	somebody
	1) попросить кого-то сделать что-то для вас = get onto 2) обнаружить, что кто-то замешан в преступлении

Например: Sherlock said that the witness could be onto something in that case. You should get onto your teacher to give you additional task.

BE ONTO
a winner иметь что-то, что сделает вас богатым или успешным	a good thing иметь возможность, которая сделает вас богатым или успешным

Например: With this project we are certainly onto a good thing!

2. GET onto smth — 1) заговорить о чем-то; 2) = get on smth — попасть куда-то.

Например: Everything changed when he got onto the Ministry.

3. GIVE onto — опять-таки “выходить”, но на этот раз речь идет о передней части здания, вернее, о дверях либо окнах.

Например: There’s a good view as all the windows give onto the mountains.

4. HANG onto smth — преданно хранить что-либо, соответствует русскому “цепляться” за что-то.

Например: She hangs onto the portrait of her exhusband though he left her long ago.

5. MAP smth onto smth — связывать какие-то два понятия (вещи).

Например: Some of you can’t map the crisis onto the inflation.

6. PUT smb onto smb/smth — рассказать кому-то о чем-то (ком-то) необходимом.

Например: I’m so grateful to you for putting me onto that eco-market.

6) Their country house backs onto the river, so the kids are never tired of fishing.

7) Why does she hang onto that old and dirty teddy-bear?

8) In some weeks he put that young starlet onto a well- known film director.

9) Having received the necessary evidence, he decided he was onto a winner.

10) He slipped over something and fell down as soon as he walked onto the stage.

11) It's prohibited to bring liquids, drugs and weapons (оружие) onto the plane.
